Borges also spoke to the emotional aspects underlying the text, claiming that the subject is “a man who is being drowned in a new and overwhelming world that he can hardly make out,” quoted in James Irby, “Borges and the Idea of Utopia,” The Cardinal Points of Borges, Lowell Dunham and Ivar Ivask, eds.
